Your 7-Step Accident Checklist

Take a breath — then work through these seven steps one at a time to stay safe, stay legal and protect your claim.

Stop

Never leave the scene of an accident. Leaving could result in criminal prosecution.

Check For Injuries

Health and safety come first. If there is any doubt, call an ambulance immediately.

Call Emergency Services

Call 911 if there are injuries, damage exceeding $1,000, or a criminal offence such as impaired driving. Otherwise, call local police for instructions.

Move To Safety

If it's possible, move vehicles to the side of the road. Use hazard lights, warning cones, or triangles to alert other drivers.

Call A Towing Company

Take Notes

Document all the details. Collect names, addresses, phone numbers, and licence plate numbers of every party and witness involved.
